In 1993 I bought a print of the photo you have of Fort Benton. I bought it at a market in London, the tag said Fort Benton, Utah, but I knew it was Montana. I found out that this was a print from one of the 12 books named Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economic Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. These volumes were published by the Federal Government between 1855 and 1861. There were 11 illustrators.
Fort Benton published a book in 1998 called Historical Signs of Fort Benton, with this picture on the cover. I scanned the inside of the book which said The Cover, The following is a documentary about the cover picture originally produced by John Mix Stanley in 1853, but was not able to paste it in this comment.
